The SCAD-ACA Sculpture Studio Gallery presents and distributes "Art Work: A National Conversation About Art, Labor, and Economics"

The SCAD-ACA Sculpture Studio Gallery presents Art Work: A National Conversation About Art, Labor, and Economics, featuring a free newspaper and website of writings and images from artists, activists, writers and critics on the topic of working within depressed economies, and how that environment impacts artistic process. Art Work is produced by Temporary Services, a group comprised of Chicago-based artists Brett Bloom, Salem Collo-Julin and Marc Fischer who produce exhibitions, events, projects, and publications that blur distinctions between art practice and other creative endeavors. “Experiencing art in the places we inhabit on a daily basis remains a critical concern for us. It helps us move art from a privileged experience to one more directly related to how we live our lives. A variety of people should decide how art is seen and interpreted, rather than continuing to strictly rely on those in power,” writes Temporary Services. “We are interested in art that takes engaging and empowering forms.”

Art Work features work by Julia Bryan-Wilson, author of “Art Workers: Radical Practice in the Vietnam Era” (2009) and “Work Ethic” (2003); Holland Cotter, New York Times Art Critic and 2009 Pulitzer Prize winner for criticism; Christina Ulke, Marc Herbst and Robby Herbst, editors for The Journal of Aesthetics and Protest; Harrell Fletcher, visual artist; Futurefarmers, a collective design studio that supports art projects, artists in residencies and research interests; Justseeds: Visual Resistance Artists’ Cooperative; InCUBATE (Institute for Community Understanding Between Art and the Everyday); activist group W.A.G.E., (Working Artsits and the Greater Economy); FEAST (Funding Emerging Art with Sustainable Tactics); Guerrilla Art Action Group; 16 Beaver Group; Teaching Artist Union; artist/organizer Robin Hewlett; as well as many others. The newspaper will be distributed for free throughout the U.S. and in Puerto Rico.

The exhibit at the SCAD-ACA Sculpture Studio Gallery will run from March 22nd through April 2nd, Fischer will lead a discussion based on the art, labor, and economic issues raised in Art Work on Friday, April 2nd at 6pm. A Reception will follow from 7-8 p.m. All events are free and open to the public.

The SCAD-ACA Sculpture Studio Gallery is free of admission and open to the public Monday through Saturday from noon to 5 p.m.

The Foundation for Hospital Art brings Art to Hospitals

As part of a worldwide effort to bring more beauty into hospitals, Morrison Management Specialists – the nation’s only provider of food services to hospitals and senior living communities – is partnering with The Foundation for Hospital Art to paint murals that will be donated to hospitals around the country.  On April 16, 2010, Morrison associates will come together at the company’s Atlanta headquarters, 5801 Peachtree Dunwoody Road, to create works of art that will comfort and inspire others, while also taking a short break from the workday and expressing themselves artistically.

The Morrison in-office PaintFest allows employees to paint a part of a mural that will later be touched up by a professional artist.  Associates will paint following pre-drawn outlines, so no artistic talent is necessary to participate.  After the PaintFest and the professional touchups, the artwork will be donated to recipient hospitals on behalf of Morrison.

Each year, companies such as Marriott International and AT&T as well as professional athletes and non-profit organizations participate in PaintFests.  The goal of this global event is to bring art and beauty into cold, sterile hospital hallways.

“This event has special meaning for us as a company,” explains Andrea Seidl, vice president of customer service for Morrison Management Specialists.  “As we are already intrinsically intertwined with hospitals, we understand the crucial need to give patients a splash of light and color in their day.  The PaintFest allows Morrison to take caring for patient’s one step further. We couldn’t be more excited.”

High Museum of Art Atlanta offers a new perspective on the exquisite contours of rare 20th century classic automobiles

Though "The Allure of the Automobile" at the High Museum of Art Atlanta offers a new perspective on the exquisite contours of rare 20th century classic automobiles, the exhibit features automobiles as a work of decorative art -- the way car enthusiasts have always seen them.

The 18 cars selected for the exhibit expand on former Museum of Modern of Art curator Arthur Drexler's premise for the 1951 MoMA show "Eight Automobiles." As Drexler said, "Automobiles are hollow, rolling sculpture. They have interior spaces corresponding to an outer form, like buildings, but the designer's aesthetic purpose is to enclose the functioning parts of an automobile, as well as its passengers, in a package suggesting directed movement along the ground."

"Allure of the Automobile" takes this concept further with a retrospective glance at the defining era of coach building. Cars are divided into pre and post-World War II designs, including American makes like the the 1934 Packard and the 1954 Dodge Firearrow, and European makes, like the 1937 Delage D8-120s and the 1938/39 Porsche Type 64. The exhibit marks the first time the one-of-a-kind Porsche Type 64 shell has left Germany.

Ron Labaco, High's curator of decorative art and design, says the museum has never featured automobiles before, but the show has allowed him to find many parallels between the car and art world. "It's about what denotes a car as a masterpiece," said Labaco. "It's a direct connection between decorative arts. You can compare them with Faberge Eggs."

The Allure of the Automobile opens to the public Mar.21 and runs through June 20, For more of Tamara's cool car-related musings, check out her website, gotryke.com

Have you ever thought about volunteering at the High? Now's your chance!

Education Program Volunteers
Becoming involved with the High Museum of Art as volunteer for Education programs allows you to help create and participate first-hand in the unique experiences that we offer to members and visitors. Our drop-in studio programs, where families come to make art together. As a volunteer you would assist the teaching artist in setup, facilitate the patron sign-in sheet, monitor supplies throughout the program, and assist the teacher with any other needs s/he may have for the activity. I'’s a fun, relaxing environment, and there is usually time to participate in the activity yourself!

We've got two cool events coming up in April that could use a few more helping hands:

April 6th – 10th: Studio Spring Break!
Need something to do with the kids this spring break? Stop by the High and explore The Allure of the Automobile exhibition. After you've perused the cars, head to the Greene Family Education Center to create your own take-home car!

April 11th: Second Sunday Funday: Cars! Cars! Cars!
Beep beep! Steer your way to the High for the Allure of the Automobile exhibition before it zooms out of our galleries. "Ooh" and "ahh" over eighteen of the world’s coolest cars. After you cruise through the galleries, pull over for our special hands-on activities. Decorate an art car, listen to racing stories from a real race-car driver, dance to some hip tunes and design an original hood ornament.

If you're interested in volunteering at the Museum, please contact Lisa.Davis at woorduffcenter.org. You can view our other listings at http://www.volunteermatch.com for opportunities throughout the year.

Art Event:: EMILY AMY GALLERY Friday March 26, 2010

Reception for the artist: Friday March 26, 2010 7-10 pm

EMILY AMY GALLERY is pleased to present our second exhibition of the 2010 season, Return to Nature: New Paintings by Michael Abrams. Growing up in Rensselear County in upstate New York would eventually have a profound influence on Michael Abrams’ artistic career, although he was not aware of it then. The views out his childhood bedroom window of the Hudson River Valley became deeply engrained in his subconscious and have since become the predominant subject of his work. The landscapes are loosely based on these Hudson River Valley vistas he remembers but are also partially fabricated in his imagination. The combination makes for atmospheric, luminescent and ethereal paintings created from layering glazes from semi-transparent to opaque. The result is a beautifully rendered edenic nature of Abrams’ own personal invention.

There will be an opening reception for the artist Friday, March 26th, from 7 - 10 pm. Please join us in welcoming Mr. Abrams to Emily Amy Gallery to celebrate the opening of his solo show. Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres will be served and the artist will be present to answer questions. I hope you can join us!

MudFire Gallery hosts "Constructed" a national invitational review of handbuilt contemporary clay constructions.

MudFire Gallery hosts "Constructed" a national invitational review of handbuilt contemporary clay constructions. The show features ceramic artwork created without a potters wheel, and freed from the aesthetic confines of the round.

The artist reception and exhibit opening will be held Saturday, April 24, from 5-9 pm. A daunting range of techniques and styles will be presented. Starting with coil, slab, and poured forms, the artists proceed to gouge, pound, scratch, pierce, punch, bore holes and otherwise impress their will onto wet clay… resulting in craggy textures, tromp l'oeil tree bark, flowing curves, or magnificently symmetrical patterns. Onto these painstakingly prepared surfaces we'll see detailed pen-and-ink style illustrations, broad brush strokes, whimsical folk art, electric color combinations, and the classic serendipity of natural ash glaze.

MudFire invited over twenty artists from across the United States to contribute their talents to this exhibition. "Constructed" examines the lasting qualities of clay dependent on human impulse, and expresses the importance of a craft that connects viewers to both ancient times and modern methods.

MudFire Gallery is located at 175 Laredo Drive, in Decatur, GA. Regular gallery hours are noon-8pm Thursday through Monday. MudFire can be reached by phone at 404-377-8033 and via email at info@mudfire.com The exhibit and sale will be on display through May 22, 2010.

Details about each participating artist, along with images of works and directions to the gallery can be found at http://www.mudfire.com/constructed.htm

ABOUT THE EXHIBIT

Clay, most of all mediums, connects artists and appreciators to serve both the most basic and most poetic needs of humanity. Patting, pinching, squishing, rolling, and a wealth of other hands-on manipulations gives simple clay the ability to transcend its basic, earthen form and achieve finally an inspiring work of artistic expression. Handbuilding is an ancient pottery making technique, but the range of work and expression being created by contemporary ceramic artists is without compare. Over ten thousand years of materials testing, firing innovation, scientific and aesthetic explorations, and countless acts of human sharing inform today's ceramic artists. Each of them must choose from this endless toolkit the bits and pieces they start with on their journey to extend and improve the field, while delighting the eyes and hands of collectors.

For "Constructed" we identified over 20 ceramists who have made significant contributions to the field in settings ranging from the academic to online market places, with their unique approaches to composing form and gracing surface. The intent was to present a broad review of the range of possibility that modern materials and methods offer. While functional work remains central to this exhibit, the offerings also include sculpture and decorative vessels.

"Constructed", a handbuilt review, features Lana Wilson, Kevin Snipes, Hayne Bayless, Joe Pintz, Dow Redcorn, Tom Spleth, Amy Sanders, Barbara Chadwick-Bland, Margaret & Josh Smith, Eric Knoche, Jay Jensen, Lisa Naples, Lisa Pedolsky, Adrina Richard, Heather Knight, Liz Summerfield, Marc Barr, Sandi Pierantozzi, Sandra Blain, and Vince Pitelka.

The Savannah College of Art and Design has announced that it will launch SCADCon

The Savannah College of Art and Design has announced that it will launch SCADCon, a three and a half day comic and entertainment convention running May 12 – 15, 2011 at the Savannah International Trade and Convention Center, One International Drive, Savannah. SCADCon will be the only annual university-sponsored comic con in the country.

SCADCon's stated mission is to maximize awareness and appreciation of popular art forms such as film, comics, gaming and animation through education, presentations, exhibit space, portfolio reviews, forums, screenings and other events that celebrate contributions to visual storytelling within the entertainment industry.

"SCADCon provides a unique opportunity to bring students of visual storytelling together in an intimate setting with professionals in the field, while also giving the public a chance to meet their favorite artists or stars and giving venders a chance to share their products" says organizer Mark Macaulay. "What will make SCADCon special is the chance aspiring artists will have to get first-hand advice from the biggest names in the industry, while giving professionals a chance to share their experience and know-how with the next generation of artists. This is something that's not regularly being offered from a university."

SCADCon will be open to the public and is expected to attract fans from all over the Southeast United States and beyond. Organizers are looking to provide an eclectic range of programming spanning the mediums of comics, film, television, animation and video games, among others.

The Savannah International Trade and Convention Center sits on the banks of the historic Savannah River, overlooking Savannah's world-renowned Riverfront and landmark Historic District and less than 20 miles from the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport.

For more information about SCADCon, contact Mark Macaulay at SCAD, 912-525-4614, mmacaula@scad.edu or visit SCADCon.com

Augusta Art Exhibit:: Paintings by Sally Donovan

Aiken artist exhibiting at Sacred Heart

Paintings by Sally Donovan of Aiken, S.C., go on display this week at Sacred Heart Cultural Center's Art Hall, with an opening reception scheduled Thursday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Donovan received her first oil painting set at the age of 12 along with her first lesson from her aunt. She attended the Arts Students League and worked in the art department of a greeting card company in New York City until life led her in a different direction.

Following her retirement in 1995, she studied with Ralph Stone Jacobs and began painting still-lifes and landscapes. After relocating to Aiken, she continued instruction under Al Beyer at USC Aiken. Her art has been selected for juried shows, has been exhibited in many galleries both north and south, and can be found in collections from California to Florida. She is a member of the Aiken Artists Guild.

The Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art will open its fourth annual Spring Artists' Market and Festival March 19 with a wine and cheese reception from 6 to 8 p.m., followed by a full week of activities. The opening reception will preview an exhibition and sale of works by the institute's member artists. Works will remain on view and available for purchase through March 26.

Saturday, March 20, there will be a free festival, with children's activities, hands-on art projects and artist demonstrations. The GHIA will be open free to the public all next week, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Also opening Friday, March 19 will be an exhibit of the work of Chad Cole in the Creel-Harison Community Gallery at GHIA. An Augusta resident, Mr. Cole says he is influenced by the "literature, mythologies and psychological underpinnings of Southern Gothic." His work responds to classic Southern literature, landscape and architecture.

Speaking of Southern literature, the 35th annual Sandhills Writers Conference is scheduled March 18-20 at Augusta State University. American Book Award recipient Kimiko Hahn kicks off the conference with a keynote address at 11 a.m. March 18 in ASU's Galloway Hall.

The Conference also features Georgia authors Joshilyn Jackson (novelist) and Nathaniel Lachenmeyer (childrens literature), California-based non-fiction author and poet David Starkey, New York City literary agent, Brandi Bowles, and poet Robert Parham. Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Caroline Aiken will also perform during the literary celebration.

In addition, there will be fiction, children's literature, and poetry craft sessions, an authors reading and book signing, and a talk by Bowles, Why You Need An Agent. There will also be a special guest appearance by Parham, dean of the School of Arts and Sciences at ASU and editor of the Southern Poetry Review, the prestigious national magazine now celebrating its 50th year of publication.

Part of the celebration marks the publication of Don't Leave Hungry, an anthology of poetry first published in the magazine. Parham, along with Hahn, Starkey and Jackson, will be the featured readers at the 3 p.m. Reading-of-Writers on Friday, March 19, in Galloway Hall. Conference registration is open until March 18. Art Event:: JOHN WESTMARK New Works

Alan Avery Art Company will hold a reception for the exhibition John Westmark-New Works. The reception will be from 7 until 10 p.m. on Thursday, May 6, 2010 in conjunction with the First Thursdays + Buckhead Gallery Walk. This evening will also be a special event benefiting the Atlanta Humane Society. The exhibition continues through July 24, 2010.
It may have been John Westmark’s unorthodox materials – paper sewing patterns within his paintings - that first garnered attention, but with his Folklore Series it is the imagery that draws you in. Dramatic figures and allegorical scenes culled from myths and fables are the central theme to Westmark’s new work. The Gainesville, Florida artist considers the instructional text on the sewing patterns to be a metaphor “reinforcing the notion of the story.”
The gallery will also feature a group show in support of Going to the Dogs, a collaboration of the Buckhead galleries on E. Paces Ferry and N. Fulton streets. Several of our artists have specifically created a work of art that includes a pet or animal for this show. Ten percent of the evening’s sales will benefit the Atlanta Humane Society, who will be on hand with pets available for adoption. Participating galleries: Alan Avery Art Company, Catherine Kelleghan Gallery, Copeland Collection & Frabel Glass, D.E. Fine Art, The Sportsman’s Gallery, Twenty 21 Collections/Gallery Rodin.
Alan Avery Art Company is located at 315 East Paces Ferry Road, Atlanta, Georgia 30305. Hours of operation are Tuesday – Friday from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m., also by appointment.

Photography show at Fulton Cotton Mill

New Works photography show at Fulton Cotton Mill
by Gray Chapman
This weekend, an urban loft in Cabbagetown's Fulton Cotton Mill was the backdrop for the New Works photography show, featuring works from twelve photography students at SCAD Atlanta. The show is part of the ongoing Emerging Arts Scene project, which seeks to highlight local emerging artists in series of gallery shows at the Cotton Mill (a.k.a. "the Stacks"). Denise Leitch Jackson, the owner and manager of the Emerging Arts Scene Gallery, has been curating art events throughout the city for the last two years.
The New Works show was organized in part by SCAD Atlanta photography student Lauren Necko, under the direction of professor Judith Pishnery, who has held an internship with the Emerging Arts Scene for the past several months. Necko, who will receive her BFA from the college in May, said that the internship gave her the perfect opportunity to organize a senior portfolio exhibition for herself and her classmates. "We took a field trip over to the Stacks, and everyone fell in love with the space," she explained. "They all were saying, 'I want to shoot here!' and 'I want to live here!', so it seemed like a great fit."Necko herself had shot at the Stacks, and her texturally rich architectural shots are included in the show alongside a dozen of her peers' works. The collection is small but diverse, ranging from ethereal, antiqued landscapes to sharp, contrasted black-and-white images.
Gray Chapman is a writer living in Atlanta.

Photography Event: Three Voices Opens at Snapdragon, March 13th

Three Voices Opens at Snapdragon, March 13th

    “THREE VOICES

Photographs by John Bohannon, Pam Moxley, and Ansley West

March 13 – May 1, 2010

Opening Reception: Saturday, March 13, 7-10pm

Snapdragon Photography/Jennifer Schwartz Gallery, Atlanta, GA

Snapdragon Photography/Jennifer Schwartz Gallery is pleased to announce our latest exhibition, “Three Voices”, featuring photography by Atlanta artists John Bohannon, Pam Moxley, and Ansley West. The conceptual photographs in this exhibit depict intimate scenes and objects which capture each photographer’s unique voice. A party for the artists will be held on Saturday March 13th, from 7 to 10pm, and the exhibition will continue through Saturday May 1st.

John Bohannon creates images which capture his encounters with places and things that he feels have emotive potential. The resulting photographs are a collection of moments and memories – a personal experience, both for the photographer and viewer. Bohannon has been included in dozens of juried exhibitions throughout the Southeast, and his work has been featured in Shots magazine and the Florida Review. In 2009, he was one of twelve photographers chosen to participate in Gifted, Atlanta Celebrates Photography’s Public Art Project.

Self-taught artist Pam Moxley is the co-owner of Original Art Finders and Curator of Grace Gallery in Marietta, Georgia. She has been featured in numerous solo and juried exhibitions and her work is included in collections throughout the United States, including the Southeast Museum of Photography, the City of Atlanta Collection, and the Atlanta Photography Group’s Collector’s Portfolio. Moxley’s mixed-media images are simple in composition, yet complex in theme. Her work often incorporates child-like elements, giving them a nostalgic and maternal feel. When she is finished with each photographic construction, she utilizes several other media, adding layers of both texture and meaning.

Ansley West’s photographic compositions interpret narratives both real and imagined. She often places herself into the photographs, in order to recontextualize these stories. Her work sometimes portrays social issues about which she is passionate. The images selected for this show come from two bodies of work: “Fences” addresses the physical and psychological hurdles we face and how we move past them, while “Landscapes” seeks to show that human connection to the earth can be a symbiotic rather than a parasitic relationship. As well as being included in many group exhibitions across the US and featured in three solo shows, West’s work is included in many private and museum collections, including the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia. She has recently returned from Uganda, where she shot a documentary film called Mother of a Nation, about women living with HIV and their connection to agriculture.

Art Opening: 'The Art of Losing' Exhibition Opens at Emory

'The Art of Losing' Exhibition Opens at Emory

Includes elegies from poet Kevin Young's new anthology

The death of a loved one often brings feelings of despair and isolation, but a new exhibition and anthology of poems offers comfort through shared experiences. "The Art of Losing" exhibition opens March 15 at Emory University's Manuscript, Archives, and Rare Book Library (MARBL), on the 10th floor of the Woodruff Library.

The exhibition coincides with the March 16 release of "The Art of Losing: Poems of Grief & Healing," an anthology of elegies selected by poet Kevin Young, co-curator of the exhibition. Young is the curator of Literary Collections and the Raymond Danowski Poetry Library at MARBL, and the Atticus Haygood Professor of English and Creative Writing at Emory.

The book includes poems by Elizabeth Alexander, Pulitzer Prize-winner Natasha Trethewey (the Phillis Wheatley Distinguished Chair in Poetry in Emory's Creative Writing program), Elizabeth Bishop, Lucille Clifton, e.e. cummings, Emily Dickinson, Seamus Haney, Ted Hughes, Mary Oliver, Anne Sexton and Dylan Thomas, as well as several by Young himself. Also included are poems by recent readers in MARBL's Danowski Poetry Reading Series: Robert Pinsky, C.K. Williams and Li-Young Lee.

Young and Trethewey will read selections from the anthology at 7:15 p.m., Thursday, March 18 in the Decatur Library Auditorium at the Georgia Center for the Book, 215 Sycamore St. in Decatur.

"Through elegy and throughout the years, poets have traced their own journeys through grief in order to comprehend the incomprehensible, to comfort themselves and others," Young says. "Like the book that inspired it, this exhibition traces grief's journey, from Reckoning to Regret, through Remembrance to Ritual and Recovery; if it doesn't resolve the grieving process with simple acceptance, it does end with a kind of Redemption. For while these poems chronicle loss and its rituals, elegies also celebrate life - and ask us to care for ours, if only by honoring the lives of loved ones."

Elizabeth Chase, MARBL's coordinator for research services and a Ph.D. candidate in Emory's English department, is the exhibition's co-curator.

"The poems put into words the emotions and experience of loss that are so difficult to express, and in a way I believe people can identify with," Chase says. "Even though the exhibit deals with loss, my hope is that visitors will experience it in a way that's reassuring. These poems convey deep sadness, but they also celebrate the complex personal bonds shared by these poets and those whom they love."

The exhibition features books and unique items from MARBL's collection that feature poems reprinted in Young's anthology, along with additional highlights from the Raymond Danowski Poetry Library, MARBL's general holdings and recent acquisitions. One item not in Young's anthology is Pulitzer Prize-winner Paul Muldoon's poem "Incantata," a long poem written in memory of his ex-lover, Mary Farl Powers. The limited-edition printing contains artwork by Powers's friends, and the exhibit pairs the book with an abstract painting by Muldoon himself, taken from Muldoon's archive, which is housed at Emory.

One of Young's notebooks with a draft of his poem "Bereavement," written in memory of his father, will be displayed alongside a wall panel of its printing last summer in The New Yorker.

Also on display is a letter, recently acquired by Young, written by poet John Berryman to Vernon Watkins about the death of his friend and poet Dylan Thomas. Apart from hospital personnel, Berryman was the only person in the room when Thomas died in 1953. He never spoke publicly of Thomas's death, and his letter has never been published in full; this will be its first appearance in a public exhibition, and provides a remarkable firsthand account of not just Thomas's passing but the process of grief.

The exhibition, which runs until Oct. 10, 2010, is free and open to the public during normal MARBL hours, which are Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. MARBL is located on the 10th floor of the Woodruff Library on the Emory University campus, 540 Asbury Circle, Atlanta, GA 30322.
