Unbeknownst to many, Atlanta artist Steven Sachs has been creating fascinating works of art for over thirty years. His distinct aesthetic is explained by the myriad of his influences. Sachs admires the inherent honesty in a Southern folk artist’s crooked line as well as the stark, hard-edged surfaces of op artist Bridget Riley. His work hovers in between the two styles - an amalgamation of a tightly controlled modern aesthetic with a spontaneity lent by re-contextualized objects. Sach’s paintings have hard-edged surfaces with figures precisely rendered in shiny enamels. His sculptures reflect his role as “urban archeologist,” breathing new life into discarded objects. Impressive woodworking and metal welding skills lend the artist’s found object sculptures a refinement that is reminiscent of abstract expressionist Louise Nevelson, another of his influences. A disciplined improviser, Sachs has created an intriguing body of work with a profound sensitivity to his materials. This retrospective promises to be a rare journey through Sachs’ thirty-year oeuvre.LAST TWO WEEKS!
